Creative Movement Across Campus

What's new . . . In support of Emory's artistic and creative goals, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano has been appointed an Emory University Distinguished Artist in Residence. "Spano is an invaluable asset to Emory and the Southeast, and, on a global level, a key figure in the arts," says Emory University President James Wagner. "He brings to Emory a wealth of knowledge in a wide spectrum of areas and will bring new strength to the artistic collaborations between our academic community and the greater Atlanta community." The residency, the latest in a series of connections between Emory, Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is co-sponsored by Creativity: Arts and Innovation.

A Letter from the Rosemary Magee

Dear Artists, Innovators and Creative Thinkers,

We’ve known for some time that Emory University is a place worthy of its world-class reputation. It is a campus where teaching and research, faculty and students, liberal arts and professional training, and health sciences and the humanities all intertwine in real and meaningful ways.

We’re now coming to realize that Emory University is also a place where creativity flows and the arts flourish. Emory is a place where these entities are both recognized and supported for their intrinsic value as well as for the contributions they make to all parts of the university.

A research institution does not just create new knowledge but also creates new ways of knowing. Every discipline requires creativity, risk-taking, and the ability to see beyond known boundaries. The arts, in particular, foster creativity in all disciplines and encourage ways of knowing that complement skills in other fields of study.

As part of an ambitious strategic plan, Emory University developed a university-wide Creativity & Arts Initiative that seeks to integrate the arts across the educational spectrum, foster an environment of creativity, and contribute to the cultural life of Atlanta and societies around the world. We are fully committed to a liberal arts education that crosses the boundaries of the many schools and divisions of the university by using imagination to forge both new connections and new ways of seeing.

Creativity and the arts have become both a public good and a benchmark of a truly great university. Please join us and the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts as we embark on this transformative enterprise.
